It’s fitting that an area as picturesque as Rosedale Toronto was named after wild roses, which once grew around the estate of one of its most notable residents. Settled in 1820, this upscale neighbourhood is one of the oldest suburbs in Toronto.

Distinguished by lush greenery and gorgeous period homes, Rosedale is home to many members of Toronto’s elite. More importantly, it’s a strong and vibrant community that’s located near the city’s thriving centre. For prospective residents, here’s what Rosedale has to offer.

Geography

One of the many benefits of living in Rosedale is its central location. Sitting just north of downtown, the neighbourhood is bordered by St. Clair Avenue (to the north), Yonge Street (to the west), the Don Valley Parkway (to the east), and Bloor Street (to the south).

The area’s landscape—which includes ravines and protected parklands—provides a refuge from downtown’s hustle and bustle. Luckily, residents are never far from Toronto’s thriving core.

Restaurants & Shopping

You’d expect one of the city’s most upscale neighbourhoods to offer fabulous shopping and dining experiences, and Rosedale doesn’t disappoint.

For fine-dining staples, check out Sorrell on Yonge Street. Patrons enjoy perfectly-prepared oysters, duck confit, and creme brulee. For your morning coffee or decadent pastries, visit the French-inspired Petite Thuet. And then there’s Rosedale Diner, which provides all manner of comfort food in a cozy, unpretentious environment.

If you prefer to nosh at home, Summerhill Market will become a fast favourite. This shop is a foodie haven, providing pre-prepared fare that’s a cut above the norm.

Rosedale is also home to The Narwhal, one of Toronto’s best spots for edgy, high-end and designer clothing. when it comes to home decor, the eccentric yet elegant offerings at L’Atelier simply can’t be beat. And of course, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention the fact that the neighbourhood has its very own Drake General Store location.

Events

For families, Rosedale is a hub of lively events. The neighbourhood runs the annual Mayfair Festival, which takes place for two days in May. Attendees enjoy carnival rides, live music, face painting, and BBQ and drinks.

You’ll find plenty of holiday fun at the Cavalcade of Lights, a spectacular November tree-lighting festival that takes place along Yonge Street.

Many Rosedale residents are patrons of the arts, so it’s no surprise that the neighbourhood holds an event to showcase Toronto artists. Check out the Rosedale Art Fair in May to view or buy local art works.

Transit

Thanks to its central location, the area is well served by transit. Rosedale Station sits at Yonge Street and Crescent Road, connecting the neighbourhood to the rest of the city through the Yonge-University subway line. The 82 Rosedale bus provides coverage from east to west, between Rosedale Station and the Summerhill Avenue-MacLennan Avenue region.

Real estate

Rosedale offers a mix of high-end single-family homes, as well as a number of luxury condos. Take a stroll in the neighbourhood and you’ll see gorgeous architecture in Edwardian, Tudor, and Victorian styles. You’ll also find more contemporary mansions nestled along Rosedale’s quiet residential streets.

The average Rosedale home sells for around $3 million, though it’s not unusual for a detached house to sell for a cool $5 million. Condos are frequently sold around the $1 million price point. These numbers are significantly higher than city averages, but they reflect the luxurious housing stock and unbeatable quality of life you’ll find in Rosedale.
