Found your dream home and need a new home checklist? Here is a complete guide to keeping you organized.
It’s a relief that the hunt for a new place to live has come to an end but now comes another dreaded exercise: moving. Moving can be a very stressful endeavour for a lot of people, but it doesn’t have to be! For that reason, we wanted to create a complete new home checklist so you can avoid common problems.
Have this new home checklist on hand during the process to ensure you’re ticking all the boxes as you go. Once you’ve ticked these boxes you can start on the moving boxes.

1. Connect your Internet
In the modern age, Wi-Fi is pretty much a necessity. When you first move in you’ll likely need the internet to contact friends and family for assistance or book appointments to help with moving. You’ll need to contact your internet provider a while before in your move-in as they are typically booked weeks in advance. Save yourself the inconvenience of not having internet access by crossing this off your checklist first.
2. Reconfigure your Energy
It’s imperative to figure out all of your utilities before you move. If you’re not the first owner of your new home, make sure the connected energy is in your name so the previous owners will not be charged for your usage.
3. Make a Plan for your Pets or Children
If you have young children or pets that might get in your way on move-in day make a plan for them to go a friend or family’s members house or a daycare center.
4. Let your Friends & Family know your New Address
Although this seems like a no-brainer, there are so many things to consider when moving that simply informing the people around you of your move can go by the wayside.
5. Change your Address
Once you’ve remembered to tell everyone that you have a new address, let the post office know as well so the new owners of your old home won’t continue to get your mail. Additionally, contact your subscription services, insurance companies, banks or any other businesses or government bodies that send you mail.

6. Pack a “First Box”
Before you start packing up your belongings, create a “first box.” This is a box that will be opened first that contains supplies you’ll need for the move and items you’ll want at your disposal. This could include scissors, any tools needed to put together furniture, bottles of water, snacks, toilet paper, pajamas, towels, bed linen, and a change of clothes.
7. Organize Insurance
It is important to ensure your current home insurance policy ends the day after you’ve moved out and the insurance policy for your new home should start the day after your move. Contact your insurance provider to make sure this is the case.
8. Hire a Cleaner
Even if you’re moving into a brand-new house, it never hurts to get professional help so everything is sparkly clean. The cleaner will do things you would never even think to do like steaming the carpets or vacuuming behind all the appliances. It will also take another annoying task off of your moving to do list. Talk about a win-win!
9. Cut Spare Keys
Once you get a set of keys, make sure to get several keys cut. That way if you lose your key or get locked out of your new house on your hectic moving day you’ll have a back up.
We hope this handy checklist helps make your move-in day to your new dream home a breeze. If you need any other moving tips or if you need to find a new place to move into in the first place, get in touch with Michael Maxwell Realty today, we’d be happy to help.
