Exciting new decor trends can make changes to your space feel less intimidating. As we prepare for a near year ahead, there are so many patterns, textures, and colours to get excited about — and that’s just the beginning. New furniture designs and unique accent pieces are also beginning to the hit the scene, and if you don’t start taking notes you may wind up experiencing sensory overload. Luckily, we’ve done the heavy lifting for you by digging deep to find out which decor trends are going to make the biggest impact in 2019.
Blast from the Past
All good trends eventually come around again and that’s why you will likely see the terrazzo design popping up all over the place in 2019. Originating in Italy, terrazzo is made up of marble chippings that are set in cement and later polished to create a super smooth finish. Its popularity began in the 1970s and slowly made its way back in 2018. With endless colour and material options, the terrazzo design is making waves in various forms including wallpaper, carpets, tiles and tables.
Rounding Up
Another decor trend made famous in the 1970s is beginning to take shape in 2019. Rounded and curved furniture is commonly found in seating arrangements like couches and chairs but can extend to coffee and side tables depending on where you shop. This curvy trend is reminiscent of the “Mad Men” era giving it that uber cool look and feel. You may be surprised to know that furniture with round ages creates a more welcoming and warm environment versus sharp edges and harsh lines.
Solid Gold
The use of metal in design, particularly furniture, will continue well into 2019. The mix of gold-plated metal material was prominent in tables and chairs in recent years, but it also made its mark in decor accent pieces as well. This year, we will see brass and iron (in addition to gold) incorporated with textured materials. Keep in mind that richer materials like velvet, wool, and cashmere will help to create a cozy and luxe environment
Pick a Side
Many interior designers are predicting colour schemes from one extreme to the other. On one hand, experts are suggesting high-contrasts neutrals will be the go-to style for 2019. The layering of neutral textures is a natural fit for most, while others lean towards the pairing of dark and light neutrals to create an edgier mood. On the opposite side of the spectrum, many designers are excited by the prospect of home owners incorporating bold colours, rich textures and multiple patterns from room to room.
A Unique Edge
Trading in geometric shapes for an artisan motif is the new norm in 2019. From small shops to large retailers, brands are making an effort to reach out to smaller makers and creators to find designs that feel inspired, but not overplayed. This could mean you will find yourself experimenting with materials you’ve never featured in your home before, which will allow your creativity to really soar. But buyer beware — if you spot something you like you better scoop it up right away because these unique maker items will likely be available in limited quantity.
