It’s important to remember the initial layout of a room is crucial in the design process. By crafting a scaled floor plan and emphasizing the functionality of the room, you can create a space that feels harmonious, inviting, and cozy. While most layouts may suffice for your needs, there are small adjustments you can implement to optimize the room’s design. Let’s explore some prevalent room layout mistakes and learn how to rectify them
The Rug is too Small
To create a well-balanced room, it’s important to choose the right-sized rug. A rug that’s too small can make the room feel less spacious, while the right size can make it feel cozier and more inviting. Ideally, the rug should be large enough for at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs to rest on it, with 12-18 inches of space between the rug and the wall. This will help anchor the room and create a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
All the Furniture Rests Against the Walls
When arranging furniture, it’s common for people to automatically place everything against the walls. However, doing so can make a room feel less cozy and intimate. A successful floor plan should encourage conversation, so consider positioning the furniture away from the walls to create a more inviting space. For larger or longer rooms, you could even divide the space into two separate seating areas to enhance functionality and comfort.
The Walkways Are Tight
Some rooms feel more comfortable than others, but it isn’t easy to put your finger on it. A space that accounts for correctly sized walkways has an open and inviting overall feeling. Creating defined walkways throughout the room will let you easily navigate the space. Walkways that are three feet wide are a good rule of thumb as you space plan. Allowing 18 inches between the sofa and the coffee table will allow you to walk through the two pieces while also comfortably resting your drink on the table.
There Are No End Tables
When choosing furniture, it’s important not to overlook end tables. These small yet functional tables play a crucial role in the layout of a room. It’s essential to ensure that every seat has a designated spot for resting and placing drinks. When arranging end tables, remember that each accent chair should have its own, and if you have two accent chairs together, they can share a table in between. Additionally, a sofa should be accompanied by a coffee table, and it’s ideal to have one or two extra end tables in the space.
The Furniture Came in a Set
When furnishing a room, opting for a matching furniture set can offer convenience. However, mixing different lines, textures, materials, and patterns can create a more intentionally designed, warm, and inviting space, brimming with personality and character.
