Everybody knows that your house should be a reflection of all that you are. Turning your house into a home is more about showing your originality than your décor skills. Since you spend so much time in your home, it’s important that it brings you joy. There are several ways to transform your house into a home.
Here are some elements of your house that you can change to help you get started this transformation:
Paint
The first thing to change in a new home, especially if it’s unfurnished, is the walls. The colour of the walls sets the tone for everything else that goes in the room. This will help you select the other design elements for each space. With paint, you have thousands of colours to choose from. To really transform your house into a home, be true to yourself! Take a risk and go for whatever colour makes you the happiest.
Wallpaper
To personalize your house even more than just painting the walls, you can play around with wallpaper. A lot of people considered one painted wall an accent wall, but a wall with a full-fledged design can accent it even more. In fact, it adds a real texture to the space. There are so many different patterns on the market. You can even get custom-made wallpaper if you can’t find the perfect design for you.
Rugs and Carpets
For additional texture, add some area rugs or consider carpeting the floors. We all know wood floors are cold, especially during Toronto winters. Rugs and carpets transform your house into a home by making it feel softer and warmer.
Pillows or Linens
Like rugs and carpet, a vast array of pillows or throw blankets makes a house cozier. There are a variety of colours, textures and patterns that will help you decide just how cozy you want your house.
Drapery
If your house has a lot of windows, the drapery can really transform it into a home. Drapery is important as it not only controls the lighting but your privacy. Just ensure your curtains or blinds don’t clash with the other aforementioned design elements, unless that’s the style you’re going for.
Artwork
Some people find a blank wall soothing, but to make your house feel homier, hang up artwork on your walls. Art in the home not only serves to inspire you but it also shows your guests your taste level. Artwork can encompass anything ranging from a massive monochrome painted canvas to a 4 x 6 inch family photo. It adds a lovely personal touch. For an extra sophisticated feel, make sure everything is framed.
Personal Objects
Whether it’s a shell from a former beach vacation or a collection of books, having a selection of items that have sentimental value or bring you joy is the best way to transform a house into a home. Display these items on shelves, tables, in shadowboxes or even on a pedestal. Showcasing personal objects is the ultimate way to customize your space and to bring back fond memories.
